BOOKS ABOUT BOYS
|
by Michael Gurian
Despite efforts to desexualize teaching, boys and girls persistently exhibit different learning styles. Based on two decades of research in 30 cultures around the world and the observations made at the Michael Gurian Institute at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, this book explores the reasons for those differences in processing information and learning. Part 1 examines research on the brain that indicates physical differences, such as male brains being larger and female brains maturing earlier. Part 2 offers practical, grade-level-appropriate advice for developing learning environments that accommodate boys' and girls' differing learning styles. The book notes the fundamental differences--boys are more active and physical, girls more verbal and social--but cautions against stereotyping children and neglecting the individuality of specific kids. It outlines the components of the "ultimate classroom," one that supports both sexes in learning, and illustrates with actual classroom experiences. Helpful tables outline different strategies, and the book encourages teaching teachers to "mentor both aggression and empathy." Useful for parents and teachers alike.

Guidelines for Starting and Maintaining a men's Group The forming of a men's support group is one of the most rewarding and satisfying endeavors a man can participate in. Over the past few years, men s support groups have been forming all over the country in increasing numbers and the willingness of men to explore their common concerns and problems is expanding rapidly. The reasons for this are many, but primary among them is that men are rapidly becoming aware that there is something very deep missing in the lives of most of us when it comes to working within relationships. The meaning of "masculinity" has become a far more complex subject in the past few decades and this complexity has created a symbolic vacuum of understanding. In the working environment, this "vacuum" often shows up in the ways in which men and women communicate.

THOUGHTS... monthly column by Larry Pesavento Brothers, Where Art Thou?
We are all looking for brothers. We are all afraid of other men. So we are all taught a gang mentality. Find allies to protect against those others out to get you. Unfortunately, the allies in our marketplace culture are mostly connected for the purpose of financial gain or material survival, and can turn at any time. Shallow connection, shallow loyalty. The only way out is to find true brothers, to become a family man. Deep connection, deep loyalty, depths beyond the understanding of our culture. These are depths that hold the answers to what brothers have been asking for millennia. These are depths that seem inaccessible without them. Go to Article

Men's Spirituality & Men's Groups Regardless of gender, I use the term "spiritual" to refer to the pursuit, experience, and consequences of a deep understanding of things that are important and true about life. I mean a kind of understanding that is more than intellectual, but not irrational. I mean a kind of importance and truth that is more than temporal, but immediately valuable. I mean a kind of life that is more than individual, more than group, and more than species, but extremely personal.

Self-discovery, healing, and improved relationships through being in a Men’s Group I’m a man, and I have worked around men all my life. Always thought I got along with them just fine. When it came to feelings, I let other men see my sense of humor, some joy, my confidence, and my anger when necessary. No man (and not many women) had ever seen me cry, express fear, laugh uncontrollably, feel shame, or experience sadness.

COYOTE... monthly column by Dick Prosapio
So... Who's Elvin Jones Last week Elizabeth and I sat in a rehabbed movie theatre-cum-concert-space in the fourth row looking up at a set of drums commanded by an African-American elder-king. His 73 year old presence in the center of the quartet he called "The Jazz Machine" held the spot light whether it illuminated him or not. I thought back to one Saturday afternoon in the late 50's or early 60's. I had happened into a little club, the Pershing Lounge on the south side of Chicago, where John Coltrane was playing and the only seats available were right in front of the drummer; "Oh no." I thought, "Now we'll be blasted with drum noise and not be able to hear Coltrane!"
