Book-of-the-Month... January 2005

By Warren Farrell, Ph.D.

Controversial and exhaustively researched, gender expert Warren Farrell's latest book takes as its stunning argument the idea that bias-based unequal pay for women is largely a myth, and that women are most often paid less than men not because they are discriminated against, but because they have made lifestyle choices that affect their ability to earn. Why Men Earn More argues that while discrimination sometimes plays a part, both men and women unconsciously make trade-offs that affect how much they earn. Farrell clearly defines the 25 different workplace choices that affect women's and men's incomes -- including putting in more hours at work, taking riskier jobs or more hazardous assignments, being willing to change location, and training for technical jobs that involve less people contact -- and provides readers with specific, research-supported ways for women to earn higher pay. Why Men Earn More, with its brashness in the face of political correctness, is sure to ignite a storm of media controversy that will help to make this thoroughly pragmatic expose Warren Farrell's next bestseller.

Excerpts...  by Warren Farrell, Ph.D.
Why Men Earn More
Dr. Farrell shares his journey with us—how he saw his wife, a business owner, responding to employees who wanted a balanced life with equal pay. What he was being told by CEOs “in private” that they were unwilling to say in public. Warren shares how his discovery that never-married women have long out-earned never-married men led him on the search for factors other than the male-female factor that accounted for the pay gap, and helped him understand that men’s workplace choices were not “choices” per se, but the married man’s fulfillment of his financial responsibilities.

COYOTE... monthly column by Dick Prosapio
First of All, You Could Die
I
sat on the edge of the exam table with one of those open-backed gowns loosely tied at the back of my neck. The first words out of the doc-in-training's mouth were not exactly what I wanted to hear. I would have preferred some kind of preamble which would start with, "Well now, this is a simple procedure and no problem at all.." etc.

Letters to the Editor... a new MENSIGHT feature
Censorship?
From: Joe Manthey
Dear Editor,
On 12/5/04 I wrote you with my concerns about Jed Diamond's "Irritable Male Syndrome" essay published on your website. You promptly wrote back the same day and informed me that if I wanted to write a letter to the editor responding to the essay in question, you would publish such. On 12/8/04 I submitted a 1767 word response to Diamond's 3549 word opinion piece. You then called me on the phone the same day and said you would run it in full if I made one small change for clarity purposes, which I did.

JEFF'S LIFE... monthly column by Jeff Stimpson
Binkie-dom
A
lex has four binkies. (Ned, incidentally, shoves one in his mouth when he sees Alex with one, and when he thinks it will bother me. Ned looks ridiculous with a binkie. There, I said it, and I don't think that one day he'll hate me for saying it.) Alex has two "old binkies," one green and one yellow, and two "new," yellow and blue. The shields on the new binkies -- I guess you call them shields; I really didn't think I'd have to be thinking about binkies at my age -- have holes in them, like masks for tiny hockey goalies. Alex won't have anything to do with the new binkies. But after especially trying schooldays, Alex will by 7:30 fly into the living room from his bedroom, a binkie in his face and fondling a soft piece of cloth, reminding me of Churchill conducting a last bit of war business before bed in a robe and with a cigar. Alex is tactile, and is another term I remember from deep in doctor days: "Orally centered."

A Story from Life... by Joe Mancini Jr.,Ph. D.
The Fisherman - Part 1 of 3 parts
I climb the sixty-two steps to the third floor—I counted them once on one of the many such trips I had made for him.  Lighting one of my Benson & Hedges, I recall the Camels he had chain-smoked until he found out about his angina and switched to cherry Lifesavers.  My mother would tell my sisters and me, “Don’t give him an attack.”  “Go help him,” she would say when he worked around the house, laying linoleum in each of their bedrooms or building pine shelves to store canned goods.  And I would go.  Occasionally, I would hand him an awl, a C-clamp, or the ripsaw he always had to identify for me.  Mostly I just sat, jiggling my leg, or stood shifting from foot to foot.  There had been one more message:  “He needs you to go to the ocean with him. To relax,” she would say.

Article... by Steven Stosny, PhD.
Anger and Health
The effects of anger on health have more to do with duration than frequency and intensity. The normal experience of overt anger lasts only a few minutes. But the subtle forms of anger, such as resentment, impatience, irritability, grouchiness, etc., can go on for hours and days at a time. Consistent, prolonged levels of anger give a person a five times greater chance of dying before age 50. Anger elevates blood pressure, increases threat of stroke, heart disease, cancer, depression, anxiety disorders, and, in general, depresses the immune system (angry people have lots of little aches and pains or get a lot of colds and bouts of flu or headaches or upset stomachs). To make matters worse, angry people tend to seek relief from the ill-moods caused by anger through other health-endangering habits, such as smoking and drinking, or through compulsive behavior such as workaholism and perfectionism.

Article Update... by Paul M. Fleiss, MD, MPH
The Foreskin Is Necessary: Part two of two parts
Depending on the amount of skin cut off, circumcision robs a male of as much as 80 percent or more of his penile skin. Depending on the foreskin's length, cutting it off makes the penis as much as 25 percent or more shorter. Careful anatomical investigations have shown that circumcision cuts off more than 3 feet of veins, arteries, and capillaries, 240 feet of nerves, and more than 20,000 nerve endings.31 The foreskin's muscles, glands, mucous membrane, and epithelial tissue are destroyed, as well.

Husband Abuse Aided by Social, Legal Biases
: Part 4 of Four Parts
As noted in past articles on husband abuse, this silent crime of domestic violence and domestic abuse perpetrated by women against their intimate partners is more pervasive in our society than currently recognized or publicly acknowledged. The four primary reasons for its underreporting are:

bullet

Lack of social and legal support systems to help protect the rights of abused men.

bullet

Socio-political concerns that established efforts to help abused women will become undermined.

bullet

Social gender bias that promotes women as being non-violent by nature.

bullet

Fear and shame of abused men.

TOWARD MANHOOD... A book in progress by Larry Pesavento
A Journey to the Wilderness of the Soul
From chapter 7 - Part 1... The Vader Voice

The father represents a view of the world outside the family.
To the young boy this is the world of strangers. The father's world was the marketplace of the village, today's social and business world. The young boy is both afraid of and fascinated by this new world. He knows this is the world of men. He instinctively knows this is where his manhood lies
